Green Rewind By Marty Schupak Sunday. Nov.8, 2015

Grasping and tackling! Grasping and tackling! It is amazing what this does during the course of a football game. Add five sacks and you can off set a good effort by an up and coming young Jacksonville Jaguars team. Make no mistake that Blake Bortles will be heard from for years to come. The Jags two young receivers “The Allen Boys”, Hurns and Robinson made Cromartie and even Revis look just average throughout most of the game. It was the constant pressure by the Jets defense on Bortles that won this game. Rookie Lorenzo Mauldin had 2 of the Jets 5 sacks. And Marcus Williams had two interceptions with the second one sealing the victory. The Jets are fortunate to have Mo Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson on the same line. What makes these players special is the way they can penetrate the line of scrimmage and turn on a dime and make a down field tackle. Demario Davis had a bounce back game.
It was a great move that I have been calling for weeks to put Antonio Cromartie back to return kickoffs. On his 54 yard return, he got up the field extremely fast. This is an improvement from having Stacy return kicks. Cro will eventually break one!
On offense, Fitzpatrick did a great job leading the Jets. He has really taken control of this offense. His line of 21-34, 272 yards and 2 TDs are stats I would take every week.  And no turnovers! The only negative is he seems to under throw open receivers on what appears to be a sure touchdown pass at least once a game. His back shoulder throw to Decker and the TD pass to Marshall were excellent. Speaking of Decker, the leaping 3rd down pass reception over the middle was a thing of beauty. Even Kenbrell Thompkins (#10) is beginning to make a name for himself.
Our running game was awful. I’m not sure if Ivory is still hurt of what but the line seems to collapse and it seems like every second down play is 2nd and 9, or 2nd and 12. There is way too much negative yardage on running plays. The Jets must consider each week opening up with a passing game to develop the running game. They have the receivers to do it and even tight end Jeff Cumberland had a 44 yard reception. Nick Mangold went out in the second quarter and hopefully with this short week, he’ll be back on Thursday. On one of Ivory’s touchdown runs, Tommy Bohanon had an excellent block. The Kellen Davis fumble recovery on the punt was a huge play. Great hustle by him!
The Jaguars scoring at the end of the first half as well as their fourth quarter touchdown drive of 72 yards on 3 plays were a disgrace. The Jets have got to come up and make some stops on those drives. And going back to the second quarter, Revis had a sure INT thrown right into his hands that he dropped.
The Jets stand 5-3 with another game Thursday. We have to win both! Bring on the Bills!

Green Tidbits:

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who tore at least one ligament in his non-throwing thumb last week, may have surgery Friday a day after the Bills game.

Ryan Quigley became the emergency kicker and did a terrific job, making all four of his extra-point attempts.

On running plays, our offensive line is looking old and slow.

Fitzpatrick is really good on the cadence count drawing defenses off side.

Is D’Brick going make All Pro this year?

I’ve been on Zac Stacy as a return man this year but each week he is becoming more dependable catching passes out of the backfield.

Speaking of dependable, left guard James Carpenter who didn’t have a great game is having a real good season.

We need Willie Colon back! Not the Willie Colon from the Raider game. The Willie Colon that blocks on every play!

Marcus Williams played both Safety and defensive back and did a real good job! Halfway through the season, this second year undrafted free agent from North Dakota State has four INT’s already!
