Jets First Team Defense Dominates

In the span of 24 hours, Geno Smith and Christian Hackenberg’s value have gone up!
On his touchdown drive, Christian Hackenberg actually made it look easy. His completions were with pinpoint accuracy and were placed in spots the cover man could not tip or intercept. This is a great sign for a young quarterback. Despite his horrid interception, Hackenberg looked better against the Giants than he has in any Jet practice to date. Stay tuned on his progress and let’s hope we have something here.
Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo went down and the Cowboys announced Saturday that an MRI revealed a broken bone in his back. The word is he won’t be back till mid season. Right now their starting QB is rookie Dak Prescott who has looked excellent so far in the pre-season. Back-up quarterbacks that have starting experience are a premium in the NFL. This is good for Geno Smith and the Jets. Let’s keep a close eye on Dallas.
Saturday’s game against the Giants revealed a lot about the upcoming season. The Jets offense did not have much rhythm for most of the game. Ryan Fitzpatrick had a beauty of a throw to Eric Decker’s back shoulder for a touchdown. Hackenberg had some nice throws and Petty looked just okay. I thought the team lacked consistency and besides his TD pass, Fitz looked way off to me missing receivers or throwing behind them. His fumble was awful and he has got to protect the ball better. Wide Receiver Jalen Marshall looked good on a few plays. Even on his fumble he was trying to put the ball on his other side which is fundamentally the right move. Robby Anderson is a lock to make the team. At times he looks like a veteran receiver. The knock in College (Temple) was he would drop the easy throws. So far he has shown only positives. Zach Sudfeld had a couple of good receptions. After last week’s fumble he was holding the football like it was a life saver on the Titanic. I thought he was going to squeeze the air out of it. I liked what I saw of Matt Forté. He didn’t do anything spectacular but did okay running and receiving. He will be fine once the season starts. Bilal Powell has all of a sudden developed a burst of speed we never saw in his first couple of years. He looked good also. Todd Bowles should consider throwing the ball more to tight end
Brandon Bostick (#82). This guy has a huge frame and though he only has 12 life-time receptions in three years, I have a good feeling about him. I’m still concerned about our offensive line. I thought we lost the point of attack too often during the game. I don’t want to jinx him but I’d be surprised if Fitzpatrick doesn’t miss 2 or 3 games this year. He is going to banged around a lot.
What can you say about our defense? Mo Wilkerson was throwing the opposition around like they were mannequins. Leonard Williams and Calvin Pryor were all over the field. The interception by Revis was nice. Our linebackers plugged the holes well. Of course Dee Milliner got burnt for a TD and Marcus Williams got turned around at least once. All in all the Jets have the kind of defense that will keep opposing offensive coordinators up at night. It should be a fun season on the defensive side of the ball. Look for a big number of interceptions this year (thanks to the line).

 Green Tidbits:

….I don’t think there a receiver in the NFL who runs better routes than Eric Decker....Free Safety Marcus Gilchrist is one of those players we don’t hear much about. He just continues to do a fine job very quietly….Jet coaches are crazy about draft pick CB Juston Burris. I just don’t see it yet….If I was Eli I would up my disability insurance. The Giant OL looks in pretty bad shape….Stephen Hill cut by the Panthers....If there is room, let's give Jeremy Ross a shot.

What the Jet Scribes are saying:

Rich Cimini, ESPN

In training camp, Hackenberg was erratic, to put it kindly. He didn't get many practice reps, and most of the ones he received didn't go well. You know he has a strong arm, but he forgot to pack it to camp. It was his own version of "Duck Dynasty." But Saturday night, after starting with two incomplete passes and a delay-of-game penalty, Hackenberg completed four in a row, each one a different type of throw. There was a small-window throw to Zach Sudfeld for 16 yards, a 26-yard fastball to Charone Peake over the middle, a well-timed out route to Robby Anderson for 27 yards and a touch throw to Anderson for a 10-yard touchdown on a corner fade.
"It was sweet," Hackenberg said of the touchdown.
That stretch lasted only three minutes, but it was a long-awaited glimpse of Hackenberg's potential. You can downplay it if you want, saying it happened against the Giants' third-stringers, but it was something. When a quarterback is drafted in the second round, he needs to give the organization a feel-good moment or two. Hackenberg did that.

The Jets defense looks ready for the Bengals. While Gang Green’s offense had some hiccups Saturday night against the Giants in its third preseason game, the starting defense played about as well as Todd Bowles could have hoped. The Giants managed just 47 yards against the Jets’ starting defense in the first half. Giants quarterback Eli Manning was intercepted by Darrelle Revis, the Giants had three three-and-outs and their longest drive was six plays. Happy with what he saw, Bowles removed the starters at halftime.

Todd Bowles had 1 successful replay challenge all last year. Tonight he's had 2 successful challenges in span of 5 plays.
