For those of you too young to know or remember, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a movie made in 1975 based on the book by Ken Kesey. Not to bore you Jet fans but the premise was that people in mental institutions in the 1950’s and 1960’s were not that crazy and got more insane the longer they stayed. What does this have to do with the New York Jets football team? Well there is one scene when the patients are having a group session and it begins to get out of control and it is hard to figure out what exactly is going on or what is the purpose of the group therapy? I love this scene because this is what I picture sometimes when the Jets hierarchy is meeting. Do we tank the season? Is Petty the #2 or #3 quarterback? Let’s keep telling Jet fans we have a plan and they may believe us. I’m not sure what to make of this situation. They tell us that Bryce Petty practiced all week and then he is inactive for the game. Give me a break.
I’m guessing Jets offensive coordinator John Morton will confide to close friends how frustrating it is being involved with the Jets and with head coach Todd Bowles. With a little over four minutes to go, with the Jets down by 9 points, Todd Bowles decides to punt. What in the name of Al Toon is going on? The Jets have got to go for that on fourth down. In a season like this, at least give your team, your assistant coaches and the fans a chance for hope. To punt the ball at that point is “playing not to lose” and showing what you think about your offense which I agree with most everyone is putrid. Does Todd Bowles know he was down by two scores? He did a similar thing going for one point up by 12 late in another game against Buffalo. This is not acceptable as an NFL head coach.
The Game
Josh McCown played the way everyone expected. What he lacks in talent he makes up in heart! He is just not that good of a quarterback and without weapons, he looks worse. He threw good on short and medium passes but cannot deliver long passes.The first quarter was scoreless after going back and forth. Juston Burris (#32) made a nice interception just when you thought the Bills were going to score. He almost blew it putting the ball on the ground after he was hit by his own teammate and thought the play was over. While talking about that play let me say this right here. I cannot wait for the end of the season and the Jets to cut Mo Wilkerson. On that interception, Wilkerson started to celebrate while the ball was live. He did that twice today. For what they are paying him he had 2 tackles today and besides one tipped pass, he did not make any big plays. What a mistake Mike Maccagnan made letting Duane Harrison go and signing Wilkerson. This guy is a huge disappointment. In the second quarter Tyrod Taylor began to go to work along with LeSean McCoy (22 rushes, 110 yards). A TD pass to Charles Clay opened up the scoring. The Jets answered with two long field goals and were down 7-6 at half time. Of course with 30 seconds to go with the ball, the Jets ran the clock out. These things drive me crazy. In the first half the Jets could not get a running game going and were shut down rushing for the game as the Jets had net rushing yardage of 38 yards. The Jets cannot stop an important 3rd down play which seems to be the history of this team.
In the second half Tyrod Taylor was excellent. He mixed up his plays, extended them and showed his running ability. After they scored another TD the Jets scored one. Give Bowles credit here for going for it on 4th down. McCowen got in on a QB sneak. The 2-point conversion failed and that was all the scoring for the Jets The Bills got another TD on a run by fullback Mike Tolbert who at 5’9” 250 lbs. is a handful to take down.
On defense Josh Martin played well for the Jets making a couple of impact plays. Newly acquired Kony Ealy had a excellent first half. The Jets will need more of him rushing the passer. I would play him as a spot player. He seemed to run out of gas in the second half. Both Darron Lee and Demario Davis cannot cover a turtle on pass coverage. These guys just can’t make the big plays and the opposing offensive coordinator knows this. He exploits these two on every third down play. The Bills had 192 nets yards rushing and the Jets had no answer for Taylor and McCoy. I gotta throw in my two cents about our rookie safeties. Except for one first half play and a good series in the second half, I didn’t know Jamaal Adams was in the game. Marcus Maye gave up a TD pass but at least I saw some activity from him. Too early to judge but I expect both these players to be playmakers.
The Jets offensive line lost the war big time in the trenches. The Jets never got a running game on track. And how come it took so long for the Jets to give the ball to Bilal Powell? Give Jermaine Kearse and Will Tye credit. They are both coming from winning organizations and were a couple of bright spots today playing with limited practice time and still producing.
Unfortunately this is how the games will be this year. Some competitiveness and then with the Jets coaching decisions and lack of talent, the opposition will run away with the game.
Green Tidbits
…..How lucky is Dexter McDougle. He gets traded from the Jets to the Eagles two weeks ago…..I’m so tired of hearing what a good offensive lineman Brian Winters is. To me he is a penalty machine…..Except for one mishap, punter Lac Edwards looks good. He’ll be doing a lot of punting…..Buffalo linebacker Ramon Humber (#50) was a one man wrecking crew for Bills today. Twelve tackles and constant pressure…..I’m going out on a limb. Buster Skrine will be a salary cap cut at the end of the season…..DB Morris Claiborne fit right in a with his 3rd down pass interference….My choice for the next GM of the Jets is still Chad Pennington
